The elaborate gates of Warrington town hall
are often photographed. I wanted to suggest the whole from its details, so I
homed in on just one of the hundreds of decorative items.
The rest of the beautiful railings were torn
down to supply metal for weapons and munitions in World War II. It is a sad
comment on the kind of country we live in that over 60 years later our
so-called leaders have not seen fit to replace them. The powers that be have
always been quick to take whatever they want from the ordinary people, but very
slow and unwilling to give anything back.
Of course Warrington is no different from the
rest of the country. There is hardly a town or village in England that is not
scarred by the sawn-off stumps of once attractive fences.
