Andreas Feininger trained as an architect at
the Bauhaus, and worked in Le Corbusier's studio in the 1930's before moving to
New York in 1939 and becoming a full time photographer. He appears to have been
totally dedicated to his art and craft. I read somewhere that he exposed no
fewer than 10 films a day for his entire working life.
Perversely his most famous image is the
uncharacteristic 1955 shot, The Photojournalist featuring prize-winning
Magnum photographer Dennis Stock ... looking like some kind of bionic creature
... with a Leica III to his face, one eye hidden by the ancillary viewfinder,
the other by the lens.
His really valuable work is his record of the
buildings, industry, and people of New York during one of its happiest and
liveliest periods.
