Australian photographer Richard I'Anson has been a freelance travel photographer since 1982, and in the 1990's established himself as one of the main suppliers to the Lonely Planet series of travel guides and related books.

Many of his photographs feature wild mixtures of intense, riotous colours. He makes it seem as though all you need do is find a colourful scene and fire the shutter, but as anyone that has tried it knows, it is a lot harder than it looks to include many bright, contrasting, colours in a scene, and get away with it.

This shot is a more conventional travel record, of rice terraces in the Phillipines, from his Lonely Planet book Travel Photography.

Rice Terraces in the Phillipines by RIchard I'Anson

The book is amongst the best introductions to travel photography you will find, if not the very best. It is full of straightforward, unpretentious advice, covering practical information on travelling, choice of equipment, technical matters, and how to successfully tackle a variety of subjects. It is illustrated throughout with his own excellent work.
